What Is a PCS Move?

PCS means Permanent Change of Station. A PCS move is a relocation resulting from official orders transferring a U.S. service member to a different permanent duty station. Authorized dependents and eligible household goods may move under those orders, subject to the member's entitlements and applicable regulations. A move might be between installations in the contiguous states or to an overseas location.

For example, reassignment from Texas to Kentucky can be a PCS. Orders to Germany or Hawaii may also require a PCS, with additional travel and shipment restrictions. The essential point is that the relocation follows official orders: it is not simply another name for any long-distance move.

PCS vs. TDY: What Changes?

PCS assigns a member to a new permanent duty station. TDY (temporary duty) is a shorter temporary assignment away from the permanent duty station. Orders determine the category and relevant entitlements. Military OneSource generally describes PCS assignments as lasting 20 weeks or more; many assignments last several years, but actual length depends on the service and orders.

What Are HHG, PPM, and Partial PPM Moves?

Government-arranged HHG

Household Goods (HHG) shipment is the government-arranged option. An authorized transportation service provider typically handles packing, loading, movement, and unloading in accordance with the contract. The service member still needs to supervise inventory, keep valuables separate, and review pickup and delivery condition records.

Personally Procured Move (PPM)

A PPM, formerly called a DITY move, is a self-arranged shipment. The service member may rent equipment, use containers, self-transport, or hire civilian movers, if properly authorized. Eligible PPM incentives are generally based on a constructed government transportation cost rather than a promise to reimburse every actual expense. Follow transportation-office instructions and retain required weight tickets and expense records.

Partial PPM

A partial PPM combines a government-arranged HHG shipment with some belongings transported personally. Both components need proper authorization and documentation, and combined weight limits still matter. Learn more through our planned guide to household goods moves and weight tickets.

How Does a PCS Move Work?

Review your official orders

Check reporting location, authorized dependents, travel requirements, timing, and special instructions. Assignment notification alone may not be enough to schedule shipment; follow your branch's formal order process.

Contact the transportation office

An installation Personal Property Office, Transportation Management Office, or comparable office provides counseling on weight limits, shipment types, dates, and documentation. Complete required counseling before committing to a PPM or hiring transportation.

Schedule and prepare

Many shipments are processed through the Defense Personal Property System or applicable service channels. Provide an inventory, addresses, contact details, and shipment preferences. Confirm packing and pickup dates. Photograph valuable belongings and identify any professional books, papers, and equipment requiring special documentation.

Ship, receive, and settle

Review the inventory at loading. Keep travel documents and essential belongings with you. At delivery, inspect items and document loss or damage. Submit authorized travel vouchers and PPM paperwork according to the instructions from the servicing transportation and finance offices.

Which PCS Allowances May Apply?

PCS allowances are not automatic and are subject to the Joint Travel Regulations, orders, grade, dependency status, location, and type of move. Common terms include DLA (Dislocation Allowance), TLE (Temporary Lodging Expense) for qualifying CONUS lodging, TLA (Temporary Lodging Allowance) for qualifying OCONUS situations, MALT (Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation) for authorized privately owned vehicle travel, and travel per diem. Ask the finance office what applies to your orders and review current Defense Travel Management Office rules.

A household goods shipment is also subject to an authorized weight allowance. Weight in excess of the entitlement can produce charges to the service member. Keeping an accurate inventory and moving fewer unnecessary items can reduce the risk of excess weight.

Can You Hire a Commercial Mover for a PCS?

For an authorized PPM, a service member may use a commercial mover while remaining responsible for arranging the shipment, obtaining compliant records, and satisfying the payment and claim requirements. Hiring a mover is not itself proof that government reimbursement is authorized. Confirm your specific move with the transportation office first. For commercial options, review military moving assistance and long-distance services.

What Happens if Household Goods Are Damaged or Late?

For a government-arranged shipment, report loss or damage through the military's applicable notice and claims procedures. Military OneSource guidance generally calls for notice within 180 calendar days to preserve full replacement value eligibility. For qualifying shipments picked up on or after May 15, 2026, the itemized full replacement value claim deadline is generally 12 months after delivery; shipments picked up earlier generally follow the prior nine-month deadline. Confirm any shipment-specific exceptions through the official Military OneSource moving claims guidance.

For delayed delivery, notify the transportation service provider and transportation office and ask about possible inconvenience claims. A privately contracted PPM shipment may have different claims terms from a government-arranged HHG shipment.
